Diablo II: Resurrected offers three different difficulty settings: Normal, Nightmare, and Hell. Normal is the most difficult setting. These difficulties are in a sequential order, which means that you must first complete the Normal difficulty before proceeding to the Nightmare difficulty. Each successive difficulty level introduces new challenges and greater rewards, which serve as a motivator to keep moving forward if you want to obtain the best equipment available in the game. Difficulty Level: Normal

Difficulty Level: Nightmare

The difficulty setting of Nightmare brings about some significant changes. Your character's level and all of their equipment are carried over, which is a good thing because even the enemies in Act 1's Blood Moor have been raised to approximately level 40, which is a welcome change. Everyone in Nightmare will receive leveling up and stat boosts in accordance with expectations. Monsters are also usually given buffs to their resistances, which makes them much more resistant to your elemental attacks than they were before. In the meantime, your resistances, as well as those of your Hireling, have been reduced by 40 points.

Aside from that, you may have noticed that your Hireling and Summons are only dealing 35% damage to Act bosses these days. Furthermore, Nightmare reduces the effects of Life and Mana Leech by half, as well as the effects of your curses, which are both reduced by half. Once you reach Act 5, you'll also begin to encounter Guest Monsters, which are monsters from other acts that appear to make the game more difficult.

Resistances of both players and Hirelings will be reduced by another 60 points, for a total of 100 points in resistance reduction. Hirelings and Summons will now only deal 25% of the damage that they did previously to Act bosses.

Even so, the changes in difficulty don't stop there, do they? The duration of Freezing, Chilling, and other curses is reduced by two-thirds, and the duration of Mana Leech is reduced by three-quarters. In addition, you'll notice that the larger maps and new Guest Monsters from Act 5 are reappearing. Furthermore, the experience penalty for dying has been increased to 10%.

As an added bonus, two end-game events can only occur on the Hell difficulty setting. Choosing this difficulty level will allow you to fight Uber Diablo and take on the Pandemonium Event, among other things. One final title will be awarded once you have completed the challenge. Hardcore characters will now be given the title of Patriarch or Matriarch, while standard players will be given the title of Patriarch or Matriarch.
