Experts in sleep medicine want you to know that some supposed sleep aids have unwanted side effects, while others are low risk and worth a try. You go to bed at a reasonable time, thinking that tonight will be the night you get back on track with your sleep. Then you stare at the ceiling with your eyes wide open and your mind racing, and a good night's sleep seems more and more like a faraway dream with each passing second.

It's not just you. About 70 million Americans have long-term sleep problems, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The American Academy of Sleep Medicine says that up to 35% of people have insomnia, which means they have trouble going to sleep or staying asleep (at least sometimes).
